I can't recall R4, but in R5 there is a file called MBB2CPP (item master
extension)
which has the following fields:

 T01.B2AMDT      Change date
 T01.B2ACTM      Change time
 T01.B2AHVN      Changed by user
 T01.B2AIVN      Changed by program

the change data is updated everytime the item master is
changed in some fashion, only keeps the last, but it may
be helpful.

we have a program that exports records based upon the change
date to update our CAD/PDM system.

simple, but effective for our purposes.
