We currently use the 3-character MAPICS User-id method referred to by Mark Dunn. Although we don't have the same requirement referred to by Dave Shaw, it certainly is annoying when the ever-changing 'QPADEVnnn' numbers cannot be used to accurately track the transactions. Another alternative to look into would be to use a trigger program. Similar to the thread regarding UPS/FedEx Parcel Tracking numbers, we had the need to include information that was just out of reach by MAPICS. It can sound a little complicated, but here is one of our solutions: 1) create a user-defined library and include it in the MAPICS library list. 2) create a user-defined workfile that 1) has a field -or- combination of fields that can be used to relate to the target MAPICS file and 2) contains the information that you need to populate the desired MAPICS field. 3) create a trigger program to extract the information from the original source (job-user-id, for example, from the system data structure) and populate the target MAPICS file according to the desired time/action (we usually use after/update). This was our only method of including non-MAPICS data because we elected not to purchase source-code. The use of triggers is as close as we would like to get to the overhead of maintaining modified code.
