Adding customer masters

Has anyone ever had this problem when adding customer masters in XA.  We
have about 20 people who enter new customers. In MAPICS when you press F6 to
add a customer, it prompts you to enter a new customer number and does a
check to see if it already exist.  Well lets say you have two different
users enter the same number,  what happens?  The first user to finish the
entry of all the data gets the customer number and poor user number two does
not even get a message that all the data they just typed in is GONE!  My
question is how do other companies assign customer numbers?
