I agree it sounds like a grub issue. I tried to use a LiveCD to upgrade but
that didn't work (that also got hung up, and after waiting for 15 minutes
for ANYTHING to happen I just canceled it)

I haven't tried Barry for about 9 months probably.

For an email client I used to use Thunderbird, but it has a bug in it if you
paste from tn5250j it will bomb the app and it won't allow you to restart it
for a couple minutes. Being I cut and paste a lot that was a huge issue.
Now I use Outlook 2007 in a VirtualBox Windowx XP Pro instance.

Okay, now that you have justified the Mac to yourself, do you want to get
your broke Karmic working? ;-)

Your problem definitely sounds like a Grub issue based on my experience.

Interesting on the Blackberry. Last weekend I borrowed a Sprint Aircard and
I had it working on Karmic in about 4 clicks of the mouse. Very painless.
Out in the backwoods of Michigan speedtest.org said it had .7 mb/s down
and .31 mb/s up. I was impressed. I know another who uses an Alltel (now
Verizon) Aircard on Karmic and he is able to do Cisco VPN with it also.

What email client do you use? I find good compatibility between Evolution
and Outlook.

Mac has a VM in it and I have helped someone load XP into it so they could
run a Windows app. (see I helped justify the Mac even more. ;-) )
