I have thought of that, yes. But now that I know Ubuntu wasn't super
concerned about this, now I am concerned that it will happen again and I
will waste many hours trying to address it.

I just got back from Best Buy and reviewed their Macbook Pro's. I think I
will be moving forward with that and then use Ubuntu for the other
non-business machines in the house.

I have updated both my laptop and desktop to 9.10 without any issues.

Not a pleasant alternative, but have you thought about doing a scratch
install on a new drive and then copy over documents? Just a suggestion.
