Underscores (at least from tn5250's perspective) doesn't have anything to do with whether you're running xt5250 or whether you're running tn5250 on a console or tty. Whether or not underscores are used is based on an entry in your termcap file. Joel's termcap may not be specifying "underlines" as one if it's capabilities, so in that case tn5250 will default to +undescores (underscores being turned on) Assuming that this is the case (which is what it sounds like) specifying -underscores will solve the problem.
