Personally, I would stay FAR FAR away from trying to edit Java directly on the i. Use a tool like Eclipse to edit, compile, & debug, your code ... once you are confident it works on your workstation, create a JAR file, upload it to the i, and re-test it there.
In my experience, trying to edit Java directly on the i is an exercise in frustration.
