Glenn,

I concur. I am a Java programmer but I have learnt RPG over the past few
months but I am not very good at by any means. So, I love Java as well as
RPG and it gives me a nice edge over the other programmers who are
conventional Java or conventional RPG. We have a couple of RPG programmers
who find it very hard even to touch Java code.

I tried to push them towards using WDSC and one of them has taken to it
very nicely but the other one has just pushed it off. It is not easy to make
him learn Java from the scratch. He is under an impression that when this so
called tool brings in the converted Java code he could easily learn Java and
go from there.

My opinion is that it will be hard for him to do it that way because the
code is not easily readable even if it is in 'Java'. The converted code will
be a mixture of RPG and Java. In a word it is 'Java' but it is not. I am
sorry if I am being so redundant in specifying this point but I am just
trying to make the right decision.

I appreciate all the input...

cheers,

Jake.

Here's an honest opinion: forget about translators and convertors. Your
programmers will never learn Java unless they code it themselves.
Start with small projects so you develop a coding style and standards
(since you will undoubtedly make changes to your shiny new Customer and
Order classes along the way), and by and by you'll be ready to tackle
something larger.

And as your RPG programmers start asking how to do this or that
iSeries-specific thing in Java, tell them to study the Toolbox docs
(jt400). It is a fantastic resource that shouldn't be underestimated.
