Thanks to all for the suggestions - great information much of which I did
not know.

I still have no resolution but have had to turn to other things
temporarily - however I did take the time to check out that I had indeed
done a CD into the directory and that the class file was indeed in that
directory.

If I create a new .java file and try to invoke it before compiling - the
error I get is identical to the one I get after it has been compiled!  I
verified that the class is indeed in the same directory.

There is something odd about the system because I have duplicated what IO
have done on another box with exactly the same source and sequence of
commands and it works just fine.

Thanks again for your help so far - will holler if I find anything.
