Jon,

Somebody else had already posted that you must set your CLASSPATH
environment variable for your job. That is correct. BEFORE you start Qshell
execute the CL command ADDENVVAR CLASSPATH that includes ALL jar
files/directories that need to be searched for your classes (each directory
is separated by a colon). Once you are ready to use java in an iSeries
application, you will also have to execute this command in your job as a
"set up" step (alternatively, you can set the classpath at the *SYS level,
but this is much less flexible)

Also - I have found that if I do not CD (Change directory) to the directory
that my custom jar files exist in PRIOR to executing a java app, there is a
big decrease in performance, as the classes that are needed are not found as
quickly. As soon as I inserted a CD (to the directory where the jar file
existed) prior to executing the java app, the performance was much better.

Hope this helps. All the best.

Brendan

Subject: Dumb Question

I am having trouble getting _any_ Java code to run on my iSeries

I have reduced the java to a tiny class i.e.

public class TestClass
{
        public TestClass()
        {
        }

        public static void main(String args[])
        {
                System.out.println("Welcome to class TestClass");
        }
}

This compiles just fine but produces:

java TestClass
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: TestClass
      java/lang/Throwable.<init>(Ljava/lang/String;)V+4 (Throwable.java:85)
      java/lang/Error.<init>(Ljava/lang/String;)V+1 (Error.java:41)
      java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError.<init>(Ljava/lang/String;)V+1
(NoClassDefFoundError.java:38)

When I try and run it.

I haven't a clue what is wrong and therefore no idea where to look - can
anyone suggest anything
