If you are considering Swing/AWT, you should also consider SWT (Standard
Widget Toolkit).  http://www.eclipse.org/swt/.  SWT has the perk of using
native widgets.

Thanks for the input.  I'll take all the problems you mentioned into
consideration.

I would like to first mention that I'm new in java and web programming.
What I'm stating below might not be any good :(.

The problem I've with browser base application is that the UI is not as
good, compare to PC type application.  The objective is to modernize our
legacy green screen application.  This application is primary use by
internal user and most of them probably using the same application all the
time.  A non user friendly UI will not provide any benefit for the user.  If
all I want is to allow application to run in the browser, I could just use
tool like Webfacing/HAT to covert those applications.

The reason I mentioned applet is because it allow me to use Swing/AWT ect,
which provide a better UI (I think anyway).  However, I've heard some of the
horror story about applet.  That is the reason I post this message.  To see
if somebody have done that and what are their thought.

Question:
What is a JVM sandbox?

Applets can be a pain.  You have all hassle of keeping client JVM's up to
date, operating within the JVM sandbox, programming Swing/AWT etc, etc.  I
would prefer to build a browser based web app using J2EE if I had the
choice.
