agreed... When I make updates, I hit the URL to "get it started." Of
course, when we IPL on Sunday, the first wave of users wait longer than the
others....

We have the same problem. Typically the first transaction will take about
30 seconds, and subsequent transactions take about 0.2 seconds. The delay
can't be attributed to making database connections, because those are made
when the job starts. There is class loading going on for the first
transaction, of course, but I find it hard to believe that would require 30
seconds. My preferred solution would be to just leave the server running
all the time, but the operations people insist they have to re-IPL the
machines every weekend. My Plan B will probably be to have an autostart job
that runs shortly after IPL and sends a non-updating dummy transaction to
warm up the server.

We have recently deployed a small TCP/IP server written in java. We used
crtjvapgm and set optimization to 30. The java is then called from a CL
startup
script. We have noticed that the first transaction that comes through the
server is extremely sluggish. Everything after the first one processes
fine.
In addition, it seems to take forever for the program to start up and
initialize
each day.

Is there something I am missing about ensuring the program runs well on a
AS/400? Is there anything I can do to improve performance?
