Almost certainly a CCSID problem where Qshell isn't recognizing the $ as a
$.

I'm not a CCSID/NLS expert, but a team mate noticed your UK email address
and we guess a configuration problem with the display device.
The UK uses CCSID 285 and the dollar sign is at a different code point than
CCSID 37.
Chances are the CCSID of the display device is different from the CCSID of
the job so the variant characters are not being interpreted correctly.
Once they match up, everything should work fine.
