Runtime.exec() starts a new process. QTEMP would be a bad idea for that.

Qshell supports the feature of throwing an exception if a non-zero
return code occurs from the command specified on the CMD() keyword.
Something like this would probably work for you (I just tested it
on a simple example).
  ADDENVVAR QIBM_QSH_CMD_ESCAPE_MSG 'Y'
  QSH CMD('java yourJavaApp and Params')

If the exit status of a qshell command is set to > 0, the QSH0005 message
(the one that says "Command ended normally with exit status X." will be
sent as an ESCAPE message instead of a COMPLETION message.

PTF SF64741 on V4R5, in the base in later releases.
Will not be provided in V4R4 or earlier.
