It ain't necessarily so. You can take a class compiled by a 1.3 compiler and run it in a 1.2, or even a 1.1, JVM. That's one of the unanticipated side-effects of "write once, run anywhere". However, if you do that you may encounter "UnknownMethod" (I think) errors, if you were too enthusiastic about adopting new features. But it looks to me as if you could avoid that by using the "-target" option of Sun's javac command, for example "javac -target 1.2 AnyClass.java".
