which is quite right.

But, let me risk stating the obvious.

If you have a known data base and a known and reasonable
number of alternatives you wish to sort by, you can
select amongst several prepared statements,
each giving an "ORDER BY" for the various variables that are allowed.

This is not a beautiful solution, but if it "satisfices" why not use it?
