Joni-

Thanks very much for pointing out the Ops Navigator function - it turned out to
be what I was looking for all along. It also saved me some time and pain in
trying to get this to work under Java it seems.

I had a suspicion that getting a clean text file from a spool file would be a
struggle (especially for me), judging by the forum on the toolkit site, and the
documentation. I hope your efforts in working with Java turn out for the best.

Thanks to everyone else that gave me some suggestions too.

Regards,

Mike

Mike,
I've been working on this for a few days. I am very new to JAVA so it has
been quite the experience. I as able to pull a spoolfile off with the AS/400
Toolkit using the PrintObjectInputStream and the AS/400Text Converter
classes. The problem with that was once I got it into a text file there was
a lot of garbage in it too. That's when I realized it was printer control
characters it could not convert.
Sooo.. I was told the easiest way was to copy it to a physical file with
CPYSPLF and then you could put it to a stream file on the IFS with
CPYTOIMPF. I am just now using the example in the AS/400 tool box for
sequential file access to get the file from the physical file instead of
using a stream. The example works but sends it to the system console -
should be easy to change to send it to a text file.
You can also use Operations Navigator and go into the AS400 -> basic
operations -> Printer Output and select your output and drag and drop onto
your desktop as a text file.
I know this may not be exactly what you're looking for but hope it helps.

could share?

Hi,

Does anyone on the listserv have a code snippet they could share, that
outputs a
 spool
file from the AS/400 to a text file on a client machine?

I saw the read spool file example on the toolkit pages at IBM, but they
don't include one where the file is transformed to a readable text file
on the client.

Thanks a lot for your time,

Mike
