Java properties are not the same as environment variables. That "linkage" was broken about Java 1.1.1 or so. The details on why it would or would not work would relate to the details of the JVM's implementation. I don't know what freedom they have; I don't know what the spec implies or requires when you change a property. However, it may be that all you do when you set user.dir is to obscure the original relationship which is undisturbed when an unqualified file name is finally fed to the OS. At least, that would be my suspicion. . . Larry W.
