compare to constants?

if I use this method to return a value how do I compare it for a value 

String returnCode = (String) new
                AS400Text(1).toObject(pList[3].getOutputData() );
        
        if(returnCode == "E") {
        out.println("<embed src=\"http://mis.marywood.edu/olr/error.wav\"
hidden=\"\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\"
width=\"128\" height=\"128\" autostart=\"true\" autoplay=\"true\">");
        }
        else{
        out.println("<embed src=\"http://mis.marywood.edu/olr/pager.wav\"
hidden=\"\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\"
width=\"128\" height=\"128\" autostart=\"true\" autoplay=\"true\">");
                
        } // End of Else Block

How do i check returnCode for "E"
