Using the "==" operator for two objects checks for object identity - that
is, it checks to make sure the objects are identical (the same object, not
the same contents). Since the "E" is in one object, and your returnCode is
in a different object, "==" returns false.

To test String equality, use the equals() method instead:

if (returnCode.equals("E"))
{
    (...)
}
else
{
    (...)
}

-------
if I use this method to return a value how do I compare it for a value

String returnCode = (String) new
          AS400Text(1).toObject(pList[3].getOutputData() );

     if(returnCode == "E") {
     out.println("<embed src=\"http://mis.marywood.edu/olr/error.wav\"
hidden=\"\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\"
width=\"128\" height=\"128\" autostart=\"true\" autoplay=\"true\">");
     }
     else{
     out.println("<embed src=\"http://mis.marywood.edu/olr/pager.wav\"
hidden=\"\" align=\"baseline\" border=\"0\"
width=\"128\" height=\"128\" autostart=\"true\" autoplay=\"true\">");

     } // End of Else Block

How do i check returnCode for "E"

Thanks in advance!
