Learning C to learn Java was probably good advice when there weren't that
many Java resources but these days I would actually avoid C altogether as
there are many good books on learning Java.  Java and C are similar but one
of the reasons for Java's popularity is the absence of some of the things
that make C or C++ programming especially frustrating.  For example,
pointers and multiple inheritance cause much confusion and bad code in the
C, C++ languages so Java intentionally doesn't have either of these.
