I've been a little too busy for my own good lately, but I just wanted to toss in my pennies here... C is a good starting point from the aspect of syntax. But two areas to avoid: pointers and memory allocation. Both of those concepts are made superfluous by the design of the Java language (thanks, Sun!). I then highly recommend the Design Patterns books. They show in a non-Java specific way how some of the basic ideas behind object programming.
