Booth,

VA/J will allow you to do the user interface entirely with point and
click. It takes care of the quirkiest part of the program. Internal
processing (business logic?) procedures need to be written by hand and
in java, not C++ unless cross platform compatibility is not a factor.
The enterprise edition purports to be able to generate the shell code
for a three tiered app with all of the interface code. I'm not entirely
sure how much is vaporware and how much really exists at this point, but
from my limited playing around with the professional edition (the
cheapie), I believe it. It's really impressive. As to your question, a
little knowledge of how messaging works is helpful, and exposure to any
other visual development environment would be a real plus, but the
tutorial that comes with it is thorough enough that I believe a decent
programmer of any ilk could use it if he was willing to put forth a
little effort. It's a first rate product.
