Jim, It's still pretty new, but IBM's Visual Age for Java and Borland's JBuilder both have specific support for AS/400. You can write Java by hand, but what's the point? These tools are not THAT expensive, and they can help you get started with the language. It helps to be able to drag something into a project and then go and look at the code that was created. VA/J is really impressive imho. You can build a fairly fancy app without just by pointing and clicking. I haven't worked with JBuilder, but I have worked with Delphi, and I expect the quality is comparable (very good).
