Wayne Madden ("News/400" Publisher and Editor-In-Chief) gave an extremely interesting speech at our LUG last night regarding both JAVA and career development. Seems the reason both Intel and Micro$oft are so disparaging toward JAVA is that it will run on _ANY_ processor, and doesn't particularly need an OS to work from. If you have a browser written in JAVA, it can run on anything from an Intel PC, to an AS/400, to a DEC, to the chip in your digital watch or microwave -- given the right "BEANS" and enough memory (feels like I'm leaving something out there, but you get the picture). A browser give you Inter/Intranet connection, and future JAVA plug-ins will give you the same operational characteristics of your PC -- _WITHOUT_ having to "pick" (no pun intended) an operating system or have a multi-Gb hard drive just to support your software. Wayne certainly made some good points in several areas and, if I had a videotape of his speech, it would be required viewing (and I'd want to see copious notes) for every software engineer I work with. If you can get him for _your_ LUG, I'd highly recommend it... Regards, Dean Asmussen Enterprise Systems Consulting, Inc.
