I can't endorse this approach strongly enough! These people work hard to
find us contracts and they deserve every cent they get. First, they know
the market, so your rate, after their cut, may well be more than you'll get
on your own, in the end. They know how to deal with the customer that has
creeping hours. They also sort out troubles like misplaced blame, bad specs
 and personality issues.

Another way is to start with an existing consulting company such as CIBER or
CTG or a temporary placement agency like Computerpeople, etc. They take a
fee or part of the hourly rate but they do the sales, negotiating, etc. An
often overlooked but important service they provide is to carry the money -
you get a weekly paycheck while they wait 90 days (or more) to collect from
the client's AP. And they absorb the loss if a client doesn't pay for some
reason. After you get some exposure/experience with several clients and if
you build a good reputation, it's easier to break in to independent
consulting. Just make sure you don't sign anything containing a non-compete
clause that would restrict who you can work for when you leave.
