I was lucky. I let friends know I was looking for a client to get started with, a place where my limited skills would match their need for cheap help. :) The first project came from a one-man shop where the fellow was getting swamped and needed a grunt to do basic stuff. It was one-day/week for the first couple of years, but he let me spend more than that there on his machine so I could learn, and he gave me a lot of coaching. It was a great deal for him, but even better for me. Once I had that base to work from, other projects came along. He was supportive of me and told me he'd put me on an annual budget amount, so I could work as it fit my schedule. This allowed me great flexibility so I could do other projects and then come back and work with him until the next project. That worked for over 12 years, until he got fired. Also I have been active with the local user group. I've enjoyed that and felt it would find me leads. Its never produced a lead for me that I know of, but the interaction has been good for me as a professional and as a person. Good luck, and happy hunting. --------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.martinvt.com --------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: Consulting on the iSeries / AS400 Date: 12/31/04 08:16:20 To: consult400@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [Consult400] First consulting job Hello, Can anyone explain how they got their first consulting job? How do you find the client? How did you propose, negotiate, & close the deal? Thanks, Frank http://www.geocities.com/frankfrank1977/
