Since you mention firewalls and port numbers, I thought I would point out
all the ports numbers that CODE uses:

The following port numbers are used by TCP/IP:
      By default, STRCODE uses port 4200. This can be changed using the
      Communication Properties Dialog and by prompting the STRCODE command.
      Auto-connect uses the same ports as VARPG: 8470, 8475, and 8476.
      The Distributed Debugger uses port 3001 by default.  This setting can
      be changed using the Advanced settings in the debugger.

This may be why #3 and #6 don't work.

Thank, Evelyn. Those articles were my inspiration to try
this again. Got Jon and Susan's quickstart guide.

I solved a firewall problem, AFAIK. The 400 I am
connecting to is outside on the naked Internet, with a
LinkSys 8-port router in between me and it. Configured
forwarding so that the 400 can see me, only on port 4200.
