Simon, while I do have an alternative to CODE/400 I am more of an advocate of the "Kill SEU" campaign than I am an anti CODE/400. In fact, Code/400 is getting to be good enough. But... Your points are well taken. I think, however the problem is two fold. (1) It is difficult at best to write a non-breaking application for Windows. If you code works, chances are certain components of Windows aren't working as documented so you code will cause a Windows crash or Access Violation. And (2) Most people do not know how to write a good install program for Windows. And the second point is actually more common than you think. Many applications try to install over existing Windows components in order to put their version of that component onto your system. Most of these install programs do not check the version number or release date of the existing component and hence often overlay a newer component with their older one. Why? Because at the time they wrote their installation program, their version of the component was the newest one out there so rather install only an older version, they just copy it blindly. Now this may or may not be an issue with CODE/400 installation, but it certainly is an issue with many other applications. Therefore, CODE/400 or my own CodeStudio would be affected by another application's install program. :( In the old days, we AS/400 programmers would often add a second hard drive to our PCs. In doing that, we felt that we could off load some of the applications that were going to be installed. But then came Microsoft's pompous attitude that they owned your C: drive. Their applications do not let you install _all_ parts of them onto, say, the D: drive. You can install components onto a secondary drive, but there are things that they just have to put onto your C: drive. Why? Because Windows is not an operating system. It is a very pretty user interface with operating system-like features underneath it. Whereas the AS/400 is an operating system without a user interface. ;( ...But that's another rant!
