  • Subject: Developer's AS/400 (was: CODE400 4 Free)

Edmund,

This is a bit off your topic, but I thought I'd use your request for input
as an opportunity. I would like to see a small AS/400 with all of the
development tools, CODE/400, SQL, ADTS, etc., that was priced so it was
affordable for home ownership. At $5,000 I'd buy one today and worry about
how I was going to pay my credit card bill later. Based on response to a
similar message I posted on midrange-l early this year, there is significant
interest in a small development AS/400 in this price range. The price of
the new 250-2295 is a bit high, but not unreasonable if it came with all of
the development tools and Client Access. You could limit it to a few users
to prevent it from being used as normal production machine. An AS/400 in
this range would allow developers the opportunity to experiment and perhaps
come up with new products that would increase AS/400 sales.

Regards,
Stan McPartland

Sorry Martin,

I've probably already said more than the lawyers would allow me ;-) I can
say that from the feedback we have been getting, we think that developers
want something like "Visual Studio" for AS/400. One integrated package of
tools with one price. No more complexities of ordering piece parts here
and there and learning the quirks of each one. That is the strategy we are
actively pursuing this very minute.

I am afraid that I cannot get any more specific than that. If you think
this is right or wrong, we would be happy to hear from you.
