Also, the state the file is opened (update, input etc) in the first program
invocation after a share is the state it stays in for further program
invocations.  Thus opening for update means any programs using the ODP after
that initial open will read with update.

Dave,  THe share of open access paths would only benefit if the programs do
not end with LR and/or do not close the data base files prior to ending.
And
this would apply to only the invocation sack of the job that is running.
Also, you are correct in assuming there could be pointer problems.  If a new
program assumes the file is opend to the beginning(and SSA never assumes
anything) then you would experience an incorrect pointer.  However, if the
new program begins file access with a set or a chain(as opposed to a read)
you would not experiance a pointer problem.
