Well the field is defined as a Like-Define field that's why I thought the "+"
and "-" would work. Maybe I am wrong about that since the other reply to my
question says the same thing you did.

field you are trying to change?
You should be able to put the 'A' for an alpha field and a length of 49.
The "-" sign is used when change the length of a field that is defined as a
'Like-Defined' field.

If this does not help you give me some more information and I will try and
help you further.

I am trying to modify the length of a *USRDFN field from length of 50 to 49.
The field is not part of a data model but when I do a Y in the Char field
beside the field define in the action subroutine where it is defined and go
to the "Field Characteristics" screen it won't accept the change. I put a
"-" sign in the field data type then put 49 in the Length and press enter--I
get an error that says "Invalid Field Type".

Any pointers?
