 Oh?  That makes sense since the help says to change the length of a field put 
a "+" or a "-" in the field type :)  And I'll be danged if it doesn't work!!!   
How truly BPCS like for ASSET to say one thing and mean another.  Can you 
explain why the help on this very topic says "

 Field Data Type:

 This is the Data Type of the field. If you want to increase or
 decrease the length of the "Define Like" field, you can use the Data
 Types "+" and "-" . The following table lists valid Data Types.

And why the truth is very different?

I am trying to modify the length of a *USRDFN field from length of 50 to
49. The field is not part of a data model but when I do a Y in the Char
field beside the field define in the action subroutine where it is defined
and go to the "Field Characteristics" screen it won't accept the change. I
put a "-" sign in the field data type then put 49 in the Length and press
enter--I get an error that says "Invalid Field Type".

Any pointers?
