What is the existing Type of the field you are trying to change?
You should be able to put the 'A' for an alpha field and a length of 49.
The "-" sign is used when change the length of a field that is defined as a
'Like-Defined' field.

If this does not help you give me some more information and I will try and
help you further.

I am trying to modify the length of a *USRDFN field from length of 50 to 49.
The field is not part of a data model but when I do a Y in the Char field
beside the field define in the action subroutine where it is defined and go
to the "Field Characteristics" screen it won't accept the change.  I put a
"-" sign in the field data type then put 49 in the Length and press enter--I
get an error that says "Invalid Field Type".

Any pointers?
