Well said, Mike. I fall into category of 'freezing' my systems. While they're not completely static, I'm completely capable of supporting any questions that arise without any outside support. Many companies moved to 4.05CD because of Y2K considerations. This was a way for them to more cost effectively survive through the turn of the century without having to make upgrades to their infrastructure or try to retrofit their modifications into AS/SET. Having just made a significant expenditure within the last few years, many are not yet ready to upgrade their ERP package and wish to spend their time and money elsewhere. That is not to say that they do not have a longer range plan in place. A company need not continually upgrade on the same package as new versions are available. A cost/benefit analysis would identify for them whether this would make sense or not. At some point it is not out of the question to 'freeze' your system and use it until which time that you are ready to bring in new technology, software, infrastructure, etc. My only point is that many companies fall into this situation and that those that do would have no reason to upgrade except for support. I would not have made that statement for those customers that have already made the investment to go to 6.X. They are in a different situation entirely than 4.05CD companies. There will eventually come a point where there is no choice. Old systems, software and hardware, become more and more expensive to maintain the older they become. It is better to keep a clear strategic view of ERP needs that look out 5 - 10 years into the future. No matter how much your clients like 4.05CD, it is not a strategically viable systems in the long term, and therefore, you are not going your clients any favors by not suggesting that they move to new hardware and software platforms.
