George,

I've had great success with MS Access.  If you're having a problem with ODBC
timeouts, you can set the "ODBC Timeout" property to 0.  This will prevent
any timeouts.

You can also have the query run on the AS400 directly by using what's called
a "Pass-Through" query in Access.

Access is such a robust tool that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to
anyone.

As a brief "Shameless Plug", I'd like to mention that my company has begun
teaching an "MS Access for BPCS" public education class.
