I like the Windows based tools myself because of their easy integration with
other tools like MS Excel and web browsers. I would look at Seagate Crystal
Reports, Cognos, and Showcase. MSAccess can provide reports to end users
pretty easily, plus other database functionality. Beware of using the pure
ODBC tools (Crystal, MS Access) however because of some limitations. I have
seen queries and reports that won't run correctly on big tables because the
optimizer on the 400 incorrectly forecasts the amount of time it will take
to run the query as exceeding the allowed limit. Showcase and I believe
Cognos get around this by having an engine that runs on the 400 and performs
the actual querying using 400 friendly database calls, then passes only the
results back to the workstation client.
