A large amount of speed in using the 2nd Gen Interface is lost due to the user groping for the mouse instead of using the tab and appropriate function keys. SSA could speed up data entry by making hot-keys for accessing the pull-down menus ([Alt-F] should pull down the File menu). Currently in most cases you have to hit the [Alt] key then use the arrow keys to navigate through the menus. For users familiar with the green screen function keys, my experience is that they are the same in GUI. Users just think they have to click on menus because it is a "Windows" interface. Have users practice tabbing from field to field as much as possible and going straight for the function key instead of the pull-down menu. If you must use the menus, green screen function key commands are in the 'File' pull-down menu and action codes are in the 'Edit' pull-down menu. Or was it the other way around...? Note to SSA, maybe the function key lables should be left at the bottom of the screen. Also part of testing should involve picking through the interface looking for fields and functions that are not accessible through tabbing or a function key. I've bumped into a few. The screen refreshes on 6.1 once you hit 'Accept' or [Enter] are only slightly slower than terminal emulator screen refreshes in my experience. Taking the entire transaction into account, I think it's mouse groping due to awkward interface layout that is the primary culprit.
