Others have already replied that you cannot host IBM i on Power 5
equipment. Power 6 and beyond is needed so the hardware is there to
support it.
That said, when you do get to the point of creating a hosted
environment, please, please, please be sure you take the total storage
you need and divide it by at least 6 so there are at least six virtual
drives for your machine. (three is legitimately the smallest number of
drives you'll want) IBM i will perform much better even with limited
resources if there are multiple DASD units (virtual or real) available
for your LPAR.
To add the partition to your server you would of course need to add the
DASD controller card, an Ethernet card for the console, and whatever
else you might need. An 0595 and RAID card for your system are really
very inexpensive now (most likely < $2k for the whole thing) and you can
hang up to 12 drives in the partition. You would also need the feature
for the RIO/HSL connections but I'll guess you already have that.

Experts,
My environment is Power5 running i 7.1, 100% current PTF's (Cumulative,
Hipers,& Firmware), no HMC.
I have created a second LPAR (partition with VPM using SST - aka green
screen) with the intent of running another instance of i 7.1 as a hosted
micro-partition. All good to this point, including the Ethernet Layer 2
Bridging, virtual Ethernet, virtual back plane, network
server description and storage space, etc..
I have created the image catalog to load ibase and am ready to Power On and
load the LIC& OS. At D-M IPL power on I get SRC B200 1310.
This SRC indicates I have no Alternate restart device and I'm missing where
I can set this, see instruction #8 below.

8.* In the partition profile of the client partition, tag the SCSI adapter
as the Alternate restart device.*
The DM IPL will boot from the alternate restart device. Because you want to
install from the virtual optical on the host, you want to tag the SCSI
adapter as the alternate restart device.

Can anyone point me to WHERE I can set the Alternate restart device ?
Where is the "partition profile" and how can this be accessed ?
Thanks for sharing& advice.
