It's a bad number, but remember 6 on 6 on 6. It must be at least Power6 (or better) hardware, the hosting partition must be 6.1 (or higher), and the client partition must be 6.1 (or higher).

Subject: Hosted i Partition - Virtual Partition Manager

Experts,

My environment is Power5 running i 7.1, 100% current PTF's (Cumulative, Hipers, & Firmware), no HMC.

I have created a second LPAR (partition with VPM using SST - aka green
screen) with the intent of running another instance of i 7.1 as a hosted micro-partition. All good to this point, including the Ethernet Layer 2 Bridging, virtual Ethernet, virtual back plane, network server description and storage space, etc..

I have created the image catalog to load ibase and am ready to Power On and load the LIC & OS. At D-M IPL power on I get SRC B200 1310.

This SRC indicates I have no Alternate restart device and I'm missing where I can set this, see instruction #8 below.

Work with Partition Status

Type options, press Enter.

1=Power on 3=IPL restart 7=Delayed power off 8=Immediate power
off
9=Mode normal 10=Mode manual

A=Source A B=Source B C=Source C D=Source D

Partition IPL IPL Reference

Opt Identifier Name Source Mode State Codes

1 10-ABCDE B Normal On

2 GV7R1 D Manual Off B200 1310

----------------------------------
These have been my two primary resources:
*Creating IBM i Client Partitions Using Virtual Partition Manager (VPM)* http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/SLKBase.nsf/1ac66549a21402188625680b0002037e/8a657691e95faa0386257913001860f4?OpenDocument

*Installing a Hosted Partition from an Image Catalog* http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/SLKBase.nsf/1ac66549a21402188625680b0002037e/e42c5c02e68fa61d86257561005aa2b9?OpenDocument

8.* In the partition profile of the client partition, tag the SCSI adapter as the Alternate restart device.*

The DM IPL will boot from the alternate restart device. Because you want to install from the virtual optical on the host, you want to tag the SCSI adapter as the alternate restart device.
----------------------------------

Can anyone point me to WHERE I can set the Alternate restart device ?
Where is the "partition profile" and how can this be accessed ?

Thanks for sharing & advice.
