As long as that stand alone computer is outside of the corporate
network...

That "outside" computer should also handle its own DNS resolution from
the gTLD servers on down. If it relies on "native" DNS resolution then a
DNS failure may not be seen since the local client will use its cached
DNS records and not realize that the authoritative DNS servers are not
available.
