Then I guess you're REALLY against SQL, since unlike J2EE, which is
pretty
much one-time setup work, SQL is constant tweaking and configuration.

You are putting words in my mouth again. I was specifically referencing DB
conn pooling and NOT SQL. Can you speak to DB conn pooling out of the
box?

I don't know what the heck you're getting at, Aaron, I really don't. Do you
understand how datasources work? If so, it should be simple. You set up a
datasource using the WDSC Data Perspective. It's wizard driven, and takes a
few seconds.

You then select that connection using a Preference in EGL. What is so hard
about it? EGL automatically sets up a connection to that datasource,
storing all the connection properties in a standard resources.xml file, and
if you really need to go in and tweak things, you can.

Again, my experience is it still requires setup, and that is just the
beginning of a long laundry list of setups. We could hit up application
logging next - does EGL come with Log4J (or equivalent) out of the box?

Uh... does RPG come with logging out of the box? Again, I don't understand
your point. But yes, there are lots of logging options in EGL, including a
simple write to the console. What kind of logging is available in RPG-CGI?

If you consider that too much plumbing, then we have some issues about
what the term "programmer" means.

Ok, so can we get off your high-horse of EGL never having to touch ANY
code outside of the EGL syntax?

No we can't! Setting up a datasource has nothing to do with programming,
any more than downloading PTFs. Or creating INDEXES, or adding journaling,
or setting up output queues. C'mon, be real here.

Anyway, this is getting silly. You hate J2EE, so by definition EGL is going
to stink in your eyes and there's little I can do to change your perception.
That's your prerogative and I'll let you lead the charge to an i5/OS-only
solution that you think is the right direction. There's nothing wrong with
a pure midrange solution; Nathan's had one for a long time and it works like
a charm. I just prefer that any advances in web technology make it to me
without me having to do any work, and by using J2EE as my conduit to the
web, that happens.

We are leaving behind the days where a single person could be responsible
for an entire business application. I would like to see us get that back.
Maybe I am overzealous in this area; at least that's what Bob Cozzi tells
me :-)

Hmm. Well. I'll say it again. With EGL, you can do the whole thing, from
soup to nuts, without leaving the WDSC IDE.
