Let us know how this goes David. I may have to end up doing this as well to
fix what I'm finding are a bunch of problems on my "gently-used" 520.
I hate to have to go as far as initializing and reloading everything but it
might be easier to do that and then I'd know exactly what state my system is
in, rather than trying to fight all of the phantom configuration issues that
have been cropping up since I've had it (like HTTP Admin crashing and never
coming back and Netserver continuingly failing to start, and WAS Apps not
being able to load, etc..).

Here comes some good practice...
I booted off the tape. Picked the option to install LIC. I will now
choose option 2 - install LIC and initialize system.
Yes, I know this will wipe the disks...
Let's see if I remember...
Next I'll install the OS from this tape, then do a full restore...
Keep your fingers crossed.

But - does anyone have any comments on this? I have
never had a cume PTF croak the box like this... I think
I'll restore to the tape I have and just leave it there...
put a big skull and crossbones on the new cume... wait
for the final v5r2 collection...
I had this happen to me back in 1990. Applied a cume package late in the
day, and the CPU LED stayed on as solid as the power lite. Like you it
was
a development box, but in the middle of a major project. So I pulled an
all nighter, scratched the disks, and reinstalled from tape.
I had a new operator ask me if PTFs cause problems. I explained that no,
it's normally a very smooth operation, however if it goes badly it can
go
_VERY_ badly. Always do your backups before installing cume packages!
