Make sure you do a reclaim storage before jumping up. If you have the time, do it twice. I had a nightmare of a weekend last fall when a reclaim didn't catch every damaged object. IBM was surprised also. I had to revert to V5R2 in order to have the machine ready for the users on Monday AM Paul Nelson Cell 708-670-6978 Office 708-425-4198 nelsonp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of PaulMmn Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2007 7:31 AM To: lgoodbar@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Documentation for V5R4 upgrade Loyd-- I "assume" you're moving from v5r2 to v5r4. We made the same jump on our two systems last fall. Not a lot of manuals in the box; you need to print them on your own. Be sure to read the Memo To Users for both v5r3 and v5r4 so you don't miss any goodies! There's also a "How To Install" manual-- read that ahead of time and make sure you have all the "parts" called for. You need to install some special PTFs (which may require an IPL), set some settings and tell the existing OS to make room for the new OS, which may require another IPL. Make sure you have cumulative PTFs; also all group PTFs you can lay your hands on. We had IBM do the install on one of our machines, and did the other ourselves ( due to scheduling issues). I don't remember the exact sequence of PTFs (ie cume + groups then IPL or Cume IPL groups IPL). We didn't have any serious problems, but make sure you check 3rd party software vendors for any gotchas! Some required new versions or upgrades. --Paul E Musselman PaulMmn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Every OS update I've done in the past few years was in conjunction with a box swap/upgrade. This is the first time in a while for me to perform an OS update on existing hardware. I received two boxes of CDs and packing slips, but no hard copy manuals. Is this normal for V5R4? Is all the documentation I need (Memo to users, software installation, etc.) online? I know since I'm skipping V5R3, I need to review the Memo to users from that release as well. Will also review the archives and posts from the past couple months. Thanks, Loyd
