It's hard to say without seeing the definition of the logicals as well as
the SEQUEL view.

Have you checked with ASC? I mean Help Systems?   :-))

Thanks for your offer Paul.  My ORDER BY contains a field (trailer #) from 
the file I've added to the join.  There are logicals using this as the 
most significant subkey, but they all have select/omit criteria as well. 
Does this mean they won't be considered by the optimizer?
