I am curious as to what the .NET provider provides.

The .NET provider provides a pure managed-code path to the iSeries. It's
a true .NET class library so you're never "thunking" out of .NET code.
The ODBC .NET provider is itself managed code, but remember, it has to
reach down to the database-specific ODBC driver which isn't managed
code. For the Java folks, the .NET provider is effectively a type-4
provider while the ODBC provider is Type-1.

Basically, the .NET provider natively "understands" the .NET data model
(connections, commands, datareaders, dataview, etc.) while the ODBC
provider is a bridge between the newer .NET model and the older ODBC
model.
