Terry,

We have a model 820 uni (2435, 600CPW rating) with two partitions, the
primary is a production system and the secondary is a development
system. These use to be a 720 uni-processor (the development system)
and an old model 510 (the production system) from which we combined SPD
towers off the 510 to form one physical system. We used some tricks I
learned at COMMON during the 720 to 820 upgrade to avoid the need to
reload the system (i.e. did not migrate the source load of the 720).
We've had no issues related to fractional LPAR and it's really nice to
be able to move CPU and memory resources (even tape drives if they are
on their own IOPs) dynamically as needed between partitions. We will be
upgrading several of our 2 way 720 and 730s next year and plan to LPAR
those also.

HTH,

Subject: Fractional LPAR

I've searched the archives and read everything posted here in the last
two years regarding LPAR. What I haven't seen is a testimonial from
someone running fractional LPAR on a uni-processor. Someone asked
about it and received some replies on how to do it, but I'd like to
hear from someone who is running this type of configuration now, how
they like it, have they run into any issues, etc. We have an 820
running V5R1 that is capable of fractional LPAR and we're considering
carving out a portion of the processor and memory for a test system.
We would be adding DASD and all the cards necessary for the new
partition. Before we do it I'd like to hear from someone who has been
there and done that.
