IBM's sales skills are absolutely excellent. Their advertising is average, but their marketing strategies are dreadful. Their success with the Global 2000 is because their sales people do a fantastic job one-on-one. If Colgate-Palmolive sold toothpaste the same way IBM is trying to sell small-ticket items, every town in America would need a Colgate-Palmolive Sales Branch. Code/400 has done no worse selling to the masses than OS/2, Microchannel PCs, and IBM Direct. Code/400 is a programmer's hand tool. Programmers should own it, not companies. Have you ever seen any other skill that doesn't own it's own hand tools? Mechanics everywhere dream of owning Snap-on, or Mac, or Craftsmen. It is reasonable for us programmers to expect to pay a couple of hundred bucks a year for our own tools, and it is reasonable for us to expect ccompanies to allow/require we use a tool in order to be considered senior-staff, or even middle-staff.
