..well, and I don't mean to sound disrespectful at all here as I know
you've worked hard over at YIPS (I wish they'd chosen a more inclusive
name!) with others on this but up until now installation of open source
tools was still painful and relied heavily from what I remember on Michael
Perzl's work on porting the packages.

No disrespect at all by stating the truth. I thought the same. It wasn't
optimal.

although the RPM/Yum announcement might help change that.

Exactly. This RPM effort is built on and for IBM i.

But that in its self is another example, much as I appreciate you
providing the information (and I really do!), why is it I have to resort to
looking at your Twitter feed or your company's website to find the
documentation (again, no disrespect intended to either!)?

There will be more official announcements coming (i.e. the official IBM
blogs on ibmsystemsmag.com). You're getting the "bleeding edge
announcement". You'll also note that IBM put "beta" on that page. Use
accordingly.

complete control over your machine or if you've got very patient sys ops,
but ours simply don't have the time to fiddle around trying to get these
packages installed, and they also don't like to install stuff that isn't
properly supported. None of this has given the impression that IBM is
committed to open source on the IBM i, although the RPM/Yum announcement
might help change that. But that in its self is another example, much as I

enthusiastic bunch of non-IBMers rather than a IBM provided feature, even
if it is the latter, which can be a hard sell to famously conservative IBM
i shops.

I've mentioned before that IBMs support for Node seemed a little
half-hearted

Could you describe how you have that perception so we can work to address
it? IBM is dedicating more to open source (including NOde.js) than they
ever have before (my perception). And they're doing it in the open on
BitBucket repos.

documentation seems sparse to non-existent at the moment (try Googling
"ibm i" rpm yum" - grrrr)

Go here (krengel.tech/ibmioss-rpms ) and you'll find the main page for the
RPM stuff. That will lead you to the getting started page:

Install is fairly straight forward.

..yeah, that's another issue, I've mentioned before that IBMs support for

track record with open source tools isn't great, they're always miles
behind the current version in my experience and trying to install
anything
in PASE was a complete nightmare. Aaron (Bartell) recently tweeted news
that RPM and Yum are supported now which I think will make it easier to
keep the open-source stuff up to date, unfortunately documentation seems
sparse to non-existent at the moment (try Googling "ibm i" rpm yum" -
grrrr)
