It looks like XMLSERVICE includes a new XML dialect for calling programs, which essentially obsoletes/marginalizes PCML/XPCML and the work that was put into the RPG compiler to generate such. XPCML was designed to be extensible. Why not extend it to address the deficiencies in the programcall model?

Agreed - that was the right way to go. Perhaps the PCML team did not consider the requirements important enough? It took about two years if I recall correctly to get date fields added to PCML. I (among others) put in requirements for additional support beyond that but there has been no sign of it happening. I suspect that Tony knew that the situation was not likely to change in a meaningful timeframe for the PHP and other requirements - I am guessing here though.

Part of the problem with PCML is that traditionally (going back tot he days that IBM owned it) is that they were unwilling to enhance it in any way that did not appear to be needed for Java usage.
